My Pre-Departure Tips

Curious for more information? Want to read some of the common questions and see what others before you have done?

Tip #1: I suggest browsing through the Reddit thread for Lund. I made an account and posted some of my questions there too - you can get a mix of students, past and present and even parents of exchange students offering current advice.

There were three other students aside from me from my home university who were also travelling to Lund with me, but when all of us were stuck on a particular question/problem I found turning to Reddit helpful!

If you're the only one you know going to Lund Reddit will be a great place to start building a community and receive tips and tricks :)

Get excited for Lund Orientation Week! They'll be a preliminary schedule of all activities uploaded on the website about a month before Arrival Day. And become familiar with the schedule too :)

Tip #2: Know who your Coordinator is. This is the person/persons/office that signed off on your Letter of Acceptance. My coordinator was Sofi Shen.

By chance in one of my own email exchanges to Student Reception at the International Student Desk, I found out that: "it is very important that you meet with your coordinator [Sofi] on pre-registration day, it is with her that you set all courses with, sign the pre-registration form which means that you cannot change courses later. [Lund] has no add and drop period, but we can change courses if there are too many course clashes for example." (These, and among other timetable / enrolment issues are what you discuss with your coordinator when you see them).

Tip #3: Buy tickets for Orientation Week Activities. This will save you time on Arrival Day (no queues) and you're able to secure your place for some of the fun ticketed activities (including the IKEA visit, Culture Tour, Taste of Sweden and Soderasen National Park Hike) if you're keen for them. When purchasing tickets use the opportunity to test whether your international debit card works too!

As an exchange student you'll get an email from the International Mentors at Lund - a group of five to seven mentors (usually a mix of Swedish and international students currently studying at Lund) who aim to help a group of 25-50 new international students!

Tip #4: It sounds glaringly obvious, but add all of your mentors on Facebook (they also provide an email address if you don't have a Facebook account!) and start a conversation with them. Depending on the response of your mentors you'll be able to see which ones you "vibe" with more - it helped me become more comfortable with reaching out with my dozens of questions about insights into student life and what to be prepared for. Also, it'll help you establish a recognisable friend immediately! :)

Remember: your mentors want to help and answer questions. That's why they're there! I can safely say this as a mentor myself for my home university that I get more excited about mentoring when my mentees reach out. Don't be afraid of annoying them or being an inconvenience (I tend to be quite guilty of this...) - a handy line I always remember is "there is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid silences".
