Feeling fashionable!
After the tragic death of one of my thongs that I tried valiantly to fix I went on the hunt for some new shoes. Specifically, sandals that I could easily slip into and wear around the common corridor area (when you just want to duck out to make a cup of tea pulling my feet into Ugg boots was just... too much effort AHAHAA)
Not sure if they were just a lemon pair from Woolworths or if they're just shit
I consulted two of the most fashionable corridor-mates of mine and was pointed to Indiska - they're based in the centre of Lund and in Nova Lund Shopping Centre.
Indiska is a Swedish brand that is fully inspired by Indian aesthetic and culture. Inside the store I went to the tagline was "Swedish design inspired by India". It felt just a little cultural-appropriation-y, but the range of fashion, accessories and interior homewares on offer are clearly a fusion between the clean Scandinavian aesthetic and bohemian Indian influences.
I usually use the mobile app Good On You to check whether a company engages in ethical animal and sustainable labour and environmental practices. Unfortunately, Indiska isn't listed but they do have some information on their website about their commitment to sustainability:
- 50% or more of the products consist of sustainable material...we also use recycled materials [in our products]
- We strive to use natural materials and create timeless designs and handmade products that last along time
They also offer recycling services for their own products. It isn't clear by the English translation on their website but there also might be second-hand products available for sale as a way of encouraging reducing and reusing products.
After surfing online and looking at their sales, I narrowed it down between these two pairs:
"Breezer shoe"
"Mojito" sandal
I liked the "Breezer shoe" more in terms of design and fabric pattern, but when I tried both pairs on and considered the easy of slipping both on and and what the "feel" of the different fabric top would be like in summer (the "Breezer" is a bit more... silky? Whereas the "Mojito" is more like cotton or calico) the "Mojito" pair definitely won!
