Would 100% recommend the food at the Smalands Vegan Food Cafe! The food here is amazingly good, cheap and always vegan (unlike the Wermlands pub which always has a vegan option but isn't as vegan/environmental as Smalands). I'd recommend getting in early because the food sells out - they ran out of the polenta side and had to make a second batch of channa masala.
The Menu: Main
Rich channa masala with chick peas and vegetables served with rice topped with fresh coriander and chilli if youw ish. Creamy polenta with spinach, mushrooms and beans on the side. SEK30
Hands down this is the best food I've ever had at a nation. The flavours married together sooooo well and there was an abundance of coriander. The vibe at Smalands seems a little grunge but I just rocked up and sat next to a stranger who was sitting alone and we had the best chat about feminism and queer things, since we both study Gender Studies! If you're into socialism/left-wing politics, LGBTIQA+, feminism and the environment Smalands is your nation. I'm part of both Smalands and Wermlands now - and you can be a member of both since Smalands isn't affiliated with Studentlund :)

Polenta
Dessert:
Sweetloaf spiced with chai SEK10/slice
This sweetloaf cake was sooooooo freaking good you guys, as soon as I get my hands on this recipe I'm going to make it as often as I can!! The recipe is from One Green Planet. Copied here for convenience with minor changes for ingredients:
Sweetloaf:
INGREDIENTS:
- 1.75 cups flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.5 cup soy/oat (or almond) milk
- 0.5 cup chai concentrate (chai powder)
- 0.33 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (substituting for white vinegar)
METHOD:
- Preheat an oven to 175 C. Grease a baking dish with vegan butter (and if you wish, line with baking paper)
- Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl. Add sugar and mix well.
- Make a "well" in the centre of the dry ingredients and add your plant-based milk, chai concentrate, olive oil, vanilla extract and lemon juice.
- Mix well with an electric mixer or whisk until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the baking dish and bake for 35-40 minutes. To test, place a toothpick into the centre of the cake and see if it comes out clean. Note: to prevent the top of the cake from browning, halfway through baking cover the tray with foil.
Note: Takeaway available, I got mine (2 extra slices of sweetloaf, didn't come with the icing for transport reasons) wrapped in aluminium foil but it's better if you bring your own lunchbox container for extras.
