The Botanic Gardens - the photo makes it look way less crowded than it actually was
Valborg (Walpurgis Night), or 'Siste april' (the last day of April) is an occasion where Swedes celebrate Spring - looking forward to the brighter days ahead. The 1st May is a public holiday, so people of all ages tend to party late into the night, although students usually spend both the day before and after 1st May drinking and partying at Stadsparken - where up to 35 000 people gather to play games like kubb and enjoy being outside with friends. Because I behave as though I'm 93, I hung out with my older friends (all who have full-time jobs) in the Botanic Gardens where we had a picnic instead.
Vegan picnic! Nachos with salsa dip, carrots + bean dip, 3x onion chips, cookies...
Attempts at being healthy: spinach, tomato, sesame and pumpkin seed, chickpea and vegan Parmesan cheese salad
After picnicking (more like, when we all started to need to use the bathroom and saw the queues and all our imaginations went wild at the potential state of the public restrooms) we decided to head over to one of my friend's places and get a grill going in their courtyard.
I met Myra, one of my friend's guinea-pigs - she's adorable and her name translates to "ant"
Cuteness overload!
Ahh... vegan hamburgers in the peace and quiet (which lasted for about 10 minutes until some drunk Swedes came to party near us, but then we just went inside to watch a cult documentary called Three Miles North of Molkom LOL)
So here's to the authentic Swedish experience of Valborg! Food, friends, picnics, sun, running to the safety of your own dwelling away from drunk people, and cult documentaries. 10/10 I love Valborg
