"What is this strange and funny-looking fruit?" I thought as I trawled through the aisles of ICA the very first time I saw them a few months back. I've kept looking at these little orange berries, about 1cm in diameter and wondering what they were or what they tasted like - being me, I didn't think to just google "Physalis" which would've just told me exactly what they were, but instead revelled in the mystery of this expensive mini-orange fruit.
I recognised the berry perched atop my friend's alcoholic beverage - where she was berated for almost leaving (since she had no idea what it was either) since the berry is so coveted here. What's all the fuss about? I wondered.
And bless - to celebrate Valborg, I headed out to ICA and saw they were on special (SEK30 /125gm packet) and decided, why not. I'm probably never going to see or eat these again AHAHA
Review:
- Touch: the berries are slightly sticky, covered in this translucent sap almost when you touch them. It's unexpected (and lowkey unpleasant, I thought they were off when I opened the pack).
- Taste: tangy! They're flavoured like a cross between an orange and a lemon, with the flavour of a tangerine and more sour than an orange, but not as potent as a lemon.
- Texture: harder and crunchier than your regular citrus - imagine biting into a bite-sized apple, almost. They're fun to eat AHAHA
- Summary: There's a part of me that feels a bit pressured by my own psych to say that I adore these berries and they're just sooooooo good, but honestly they're not my favourite. I'm a sweet-tooth at heart and these zesty orange berries, while still full of mystic power considering how cool I still find them, aren't my go-to fruit. I'll take raspberries or strawberries or mulberries over these any day!
I realise how sad it must seem to the average person that I'm obsessing over these berries, but at the same time I realise just how much of a "me" thing it is to awe over strange and unusual fruit ^_^
