Botanical Gardens Tour @ 15:00 - 16:00
The air we breathe, foods we eat or tools to work - our dependency is noticable in every part of life. This tour, run by Birthe Berghöfer, a scholar in Political Science and Gender Studies, focuses on the meaning of discovering, trading and using plants for human history. It creates a picture of strong connection a nd plants which have "written" human history. Especially in the context of a changing climate and its unpredictable consequences, it seems important to highlight out deep dependency on plants - a dependency that has always existed, but more importantly: always will.

The photographs and snippets of information is just a sample selection of what was covered during the tour. They run a bunch of them - check the schedule here!

Davidia Involucrata or the "dove tree"

 Fern collection
Ferns existed more than 300 million years ago - planting them as one of the oldest flora species on Earth. Ferns from the time period "carboniferous" form the foundations of the world's coal deposits today. Mining coal remains one of the largest industries - and the most climate-damaging.

The tulip tree: one of the oldest flowering plants in the world, alongside the magnolia which have existed for more than 100 million years. Not to be confused with the tulip plants in the garden! The tulip flower bulbs, in the 17th Century Netherlands were equivalent in value to that of a luxurious house in a "nice" area by the water.

Just a nice picture of the garden beds haha

Nutmeg! Used traditionally as a preservative for foods and previously prized for its antiseptic and medicinal effects. People have used nutmeg to increase one's appetite and as a guard against stomach problems or oil to ease rheumatic pins. Nutmeg, however, is also toxic and can lead to hallucinations - although the amount needed to be consumed in order for this to happen is much higher than regular cooking :)
