Interior: back-end seating area
When I visited Ebbas Skafferi I had a chat with the staff member at the counter - I let him know I was new to Lund and was really into the vegan scene. He made my day by giving me a 20% discount at the "newly opened" Ebbas' co-owned restaurant, The Herbivore!
The 20% discount expires in 12 days from the issue of the receipt from Ebbas. It made for perfect timing to swing by the Herbivore yet again to celebrate the beginnings of a new year - Chinese New Year - while in Sweden!
Normally, my family gather on the Eve of Chinese New Year to have the "best" meal of the year. Traditionally, all members of the family travel "home" to the eldest living relative's home for the meal. It's a bit difficult to do that while I'm in Sweden so I'm treating myself this year!
The (Lunch) Menu: (Svenska / English)
I walked in to make a reservation for one tonight, and enquired about the different menu options (noticing that the lunch menu is significantly cheaper for some of the same food items than the dinner menu).
And here's the deal.
The serving staff are super nice. The guy at the counter literally made my day in so many ways.
He went, verbatim, "It's so stupid and we really rip customers off because there is no difference between the main items offered at lunch or dinner. It's just if you want extra sides like wedges where you can get them at dinner rather than lunch. Also, tipping is stupid, don't do it because we get paid well, nobody tips, and it's just stupid because it's another trap to rip customers off more."
Me: "Are you serious? Literally nothing changes apart from the prices at dinner? Why?"
Him: "Yep, and I guess because at dinner like... I 'serve' you, so I take your order at the table and bring it out. It's sooooooo stupid, I don't know why we have this system here."
Because he's working tonight as well, I was able to order "The Herbivore Steak" as part of "lunch" and only charged SEK140 but it would be cooked when I came into the restaurant at 17:30. My 20% discount from Ebbas is only valid at dinner, but that's just the perfect excuse to get a discount on one of their starters and order more food. Happy times!
This guy is awesome. (His name is Nikki btw)

What I Ordered:
Sticky teriyaki tempeh cubes with braised spinach (SEK80)
This was delicious, if not a bit small. I suppose it's just the entree, but it leaves you craving for more - while the teriyaki cubes resembled more of a firmer tofu (to my, anyway), the teriyaki sauce combined with the spinach was excellent. A bit overpriced for what you get but delicious.
'The Herbivore Steak' - the famous seitan steak with potatoes and a creamy pepper sauce (normally SEK180, order at lunch for SEK140)
The creamy sauce was what made the steak - I honestly enjoyed the sides (potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes and cucumber) more than the actual steak, but when you combined everything the flavours married together wonderfully. The potatoes tasted like they were flavoured with chicken salt which won me over, tbh. It was delicious - and just the right amount of full-ness to accommodate a hearty dessert (be prepared to order dessert if you order the steak!)
Home made chocolate cake (kladdkaka) with homemade (salted caramel!) ice-cream (SEK80)
Ice-cream flavours: chocolate, liquorice, lingonberry, lemon sorbet, salted caramel (Nikki recommended either the salted caramel or lemon sorbet).
The dessert was the perfect way to end the night - the portion of kladdkaka is insanely generous and it's so chocolately, just the right amount of gooeyness with moist texture - and the salted caramel ice-cream was just the perfect complement. I was about to order the lingonberry - but Nikki gently steered me away ("it's water and lingonberries mixed together and frozen, it's not good and sour,") so I just went with his recommendation and was not disappointed - the salted caramel was the perfect salted caramel, where the touch of salt (that I could actually taste, unlike some "salted" caramels) balanced out the strong chocolate and sugary flavour.
- Bill for starter and dessert came to: SEK160, with 20% each item: SEK128
- Total for lunch priced main, starter and dessert: SEK268
Loved it. Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
