Travel: Helsinki & Porvoo, Finland

It's been my dream to visit Finland after growing up hearing all about how it's pretty much the "Mecca" of education. Aalto University nor University of Helsinki offered the courses that fit my program so I went with Lund (which I am so thankful for! I love Lund!!) so of course I had to come and poke around the city for a couple of days!

Dates: 12 - 13 June
AccommodationOmena Hotel, Lönnrotinkatu 13, Helsinki (would not recommend. Get an AirBnB)

Tuomiokirkko - Helsinki Cathedral
My Itinerary:

Day 1: Helsinki City
  • Luggage drop at Central Station. Then walk to Tuomiokirkko, a Lutheran Cathedral which pretty much forms the highlight of the city skyline.
  • From Market Square, catch ferry to Suomenlinna Island and wander around
  • Once done with Suomenlinna, catch the ferry back and walk to Uspenski Cathedral. Be amazed.
On the ferry to Suomenlinna!

Day 2: Porvoo
Iso Linnamäki, Porvoo (my favourite place!)
  • Catch bus from Kappeli (underground bus station, this stop is ~5min walk away from Central Station). The bus to Porvoo takes about 1 hour, costing about €19 return ticket.
  • Explore Porvoo – mostly the old town
  • Catch bus back to Helsinki. Travel to Temppeliaukion Church (€3 entry)
  • Walk to the National Museum of Finnish History and explore the exhibits. Student tickets ~€9.
